Plans for the "Great American State Fair" — a 16‑day event scheduled to run from June 25 to July 10 on Washington's National Mall to celebrate America's 250th anniversary — have descended into disarray after multiple performers withdrew, accusing organizers of turning a "nonpartisan" celebration into a politicized platform for President Donald Trump.

The nonprofit organization "Freedom 250," created by Trump through an executive order in 2025, is behind the festivities. Within 24 hours of the first performer lineup being announced, several artists — including Bret Michaels, Martina McBride, Young MC, Morris Day & The Time, and The Commodores — had publicly pulled out, leaving only a handful of the original nine acts still attached.

Artists who withdrew said they had been misled, describing how organizers had initially promised a nonpartisan patriotic celebration, but the event had since become intertwined with Trump's political image. Bret Michaels wrote that what had been presented as "a celebration of our country" had turned into "something much more divisive." Martina McBride said she had been "presented with an opportunity to perform at a nonpartisan event, but that turned out to be misleading." The Commodores said in a statement that they "choose not to publicly affiliate with any single political party."

Concerns over the event's political direction had been fuelled by earlier proposals from Trump, including plans to print a US$250 commemorative banknote bearing his portrait and proposals to host mixed martial arts fights as part of the anniversary celebrations.

On May 30, President Trump took to his Truth Social platform to complain that instead of paying expensive, boring, complaining singers "who nobody wants to hear," the concert should be cancelled and replaced with a large political rally. "We should have a giant MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN RALLY, for 250, instead of having overpriced singers, who nobody wants to hear, whose music is boring, and yet who do nothing but complain," he wrote. "Cancel it," he added.

Trump went on to say that he was "the Number One Attraction anywhere in the World" and claimed he attracted larger crowds than Elvis Presley did in his prime — "and he does so without a guitar." "I am thinking about bringing the Number One Attraction anywhere in the World […] to take the place of these highly paid, Third Rate 'Artists,' and give a major speech, rallying the Country forward like I have done ever since being President!" he posted.

The president said he had instructed his representatives to assess the feasibility of holding a rally on the National Mall, where he would deliver a speech and "rally the Country forward like I have done ever since being President."
