Tokyo's Shibuya Ward has implemented stricter measures against littering from June 1, with offenders subject to an immediate fine of 2,000 yen (about HK$98).
According to Japanese media reports, authorities will deploy up to 50 patrol officers beginning June 1 to conduct inspections around the clock.
Individuals caught littering will be required to pay the 2,000-yen administrative fine on the spot. Enforcement officers will also accept cashless electronic payments.
At the same time, convenience stores, restaurants offering takeout services, and other businesses in the ward that refuse to install trash bins may face penalties of up to 50,000 yen (about HK$2,460).
