Two boys aged 12 and 13 have been arrested after allegedly engaging in a fight using suspected weapons, including a butterfly knife and a knuckle-duster-like object, at a basketball court in Sau Mau Ping.
A video of the incident, which circulated online yesterday (April 6), showed the two boys—one dressed in white and the other in black—fighting inside the court while holding what appeared to be a butterfly knife and a metal knuckle-duster. The pair were seen grappling on the ground before being separated by another boy present at the scene. Neither appeared to sustain injuries.
Police said today (April 7) that, after reviewing the footage and conducting an investigation, officers arrested the two boys earlier in the day. The suspects, surnamed Cheung (13) and Chan (12), admitted to their involvement. The weapons in question have been seized as evidence.
The case has been classified as an offense under the Weapons Ordinance.
According to sources, Cheung and Chan were former primary school classmates who had known each other since childhood but had longstanding disputes. The altercation reportedly began when the two encountered each other at a basketball court in Sau Mau Ping South Estate yesterday evening and exchanged hostile looks.
Cheung allegedly pushed Chan, who later returned home to retrieve a plastic knuckle-duster-shaped object before going back to the court around 7:30 p.m., where the fight broke out. During the confrontation, Cheung reportedly took a knife from his pocket. Despite the physical struggle, neither boy was injured.
The incident drew widespread attention online after footage of the fight was shared. Some netizens expressed concern over public safety, warning that the situation could have turned fatal. Others questioned how a minor came to carry a knife and called for greater scrutiny of parental guidance and youth behavior.
