Hong Kong's Lunar New Year celebrations drew loud cheers on the first night (Feb. 17) of the Year of the Horse, as the "Cathay International Chinese New Year Night Parade" lit up Tsim Sha Tsui with 12 themed floats and nearly 60 performance teams.
At 8:00 pm, the parade set off from the Piazza at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, moving along packed Salisbury Road. On-site, crowds of residents and tourists lined both sides of the street, with applause and exclamations rising repeatedly as performers passed by.
Among the most eye-catching visitors were two Israeli travelers, Elad and his friend Amit, filming the parade with an extra-long selfie stick. The pair said they were especially impressed by Chaozhou Yingge Dance, describing it as "cool-looking," energetic, and "super fun."
Amit told DotDotNews they had originally planned to transit in Hong Kong and fly onward to the Philippines, but after realizing the city was entering its Lunar New Year peak, they decided to skip the connecting flight and stay in Hong Kong for another week to celebrate with locals.
Asked whether the decision was worth it, both answered in unison: "Totally worth it." They said they plan to continue joining upcoming festive events in Hong Kong, including the fireworks display.
