In a recent interview with DotDotNews reporters, Kingsley Wong, a Member of the Legislative Council and Chairman of the Hong Kong Federation of Trade Unions, recently shared his insights on the 20-year prison sentence imposed on Jimmy Lai, emphasizing that the sentence reflects the gravity of Lai's actions against Hong Kong. Wong noted that Lai's role in the social unrest, has significantly contributed to the divisions within the city. He acknowledged that while the sentence may not fully address the harm caused, it upholds the principles of a fair trial, as evidenced by the 150-day legal proceedings allowing Lai to defend himself.
Wong further highlighted that this case sets a critical precedent as the first sentencing under the 'collude with foreign forces' clause of the National Security Law. He believes the ruling will serve as a guiding reference for similar cases in the future and act as a strong deterrent against those contemplating such actions.
Addressing concerns raised by foreign media that portray the verdict as a threat to press freedom, Wong argued that press freedom should not be an excuse to violate the law. He pointed out that the former Apple Daily had a history of disseminating fake news and inciting illegal activities, behaviors that deviate from true journalistic integrity.
In light of increasing misinformation, particularly with the rise of artificial intelligence, Wong stated that there is a need for further examination and potential regulation of foreign influence and misinformation activities. He emphasized that tackling the pervasive issue of fake news online requires adaptive and targeted responses.
Wong reassured citizens and members of the press who might feel uneasy following the verdict. He encouraged them to maintain integrity and abide by the law, asserting that those who follow legal standards have no reason for concern, as the verdict clarifies the boundaries of lawful conduct.
