Born in 1953 in Wales, England, Eleri Wynne graduated from the University of Reading with a Master's degree in Literature and Education, and is a pianist, fluent in English, Welsh, French, Swedish, Chinese and other languages. Since arriving in China in 1992, Wynne has lived in the country for 30 years and says it feels more like home to her than England.
The word "renqingwei" is Wynne's impression of China. She noted that there is no exact equivalent for this term in English, with "hospitality" being the closest approximation. She expressed that the people in China made her feel at home, as if she had become part of a large family.
Speaking of the gifts given to her by students, Wynne said, "That is a very precious memory of the time... the friendships are very precious to me."
All of this is precisely the embodiment of the term "renqingwei," the "Chinese hospitality."
