A bar in the ski resort of Crans-Montana in the Valais region of Switzerland caught fire on New Year's Eve, resulting in 47 fatalities. According to the UK's Daily Mail, 55 years old bank analyst Campolo rushed into the blaze after receiving a distress call from his daughter, managed to force open an emergency exit, and successfully rescued 10 young people, earning the title of "hero dad."
The report stated that Campolo lived about 45 meters from the bar. That night, his daughter called him to say her boyfriend and friends were trapped inside, while she was waiting outside to get in. Campolo immediately ran to the bar, only to find the main entrance blocked by a crowd fleeing the scene. He then located a side door and, with another man, forced it open, allowing several people to rush outside.
Campolo said that after opening the door, he saw "injured people everywhere; some were conscious but burned, while others had lost consciousness." What struck him the most was the desperate expressions in the eyes of the injured: "The desperate look in the eyes of those who knew they were going to die. The burning people looked at you, pleading not to be left behind. These images will never fade."
Despite inhaling a significant amount of thick smoke, Campolo continued to drag one young person after another out of the fire, ignoring his own pain and danger.
Campolo’s daughter was supposed to be at the bar as well, but fortunately, she returned home to celebrate the New Year with her parents, thus escaping the disaster. However, her boyfriend is currently still in critical condition at a hospital in Basel.
