Cheung Chau Government Secondary School, with a history spanning over a century, faced insufficient student intake this academic year, receiving only one class of Secondary One students.
Following a review of its development proposal, the Education Bureau announced on Dec. 29 that it has approved the school's merger with Tang Shiu Kin Victoria Government Secondary School. Starting from the 2026/27 academic year, the Secondary One and Secondary Four levels of the two schools will be merged progressively. Cheung Chau Government Secondary School is set to cease operation by the 2028/29 academic year.
After careful deliberation of the merger proposal submitted by both schools, the Education Bureau decided to implement the merger arrangement from the 2026/27 academic year. Cheung Chau Government Secondary School will stop admitting Secondary One and Secondary Four students starting from that year. Current students will be appropriately accommodated through established mechanisms, and the school is expected to fully wind down its operations by September 2028. At that time, Cheung Chau Island will no longer have a secondary school, retaining only kindergarten and primary education institutions.
To ensure a smooth transition for graduates of Cheung Chau Primary School, the Education Bureau had earlier approved the reallocation of its secondary school placement net from the Islands District to the Wan Chai District. This adjustment will facilitate students' applications for secondary school placements across districts.
Founded over a century ago, Cheung Chau Government Secondary School counts notable alumni such as "Wind-surfing Queen" Lee Lai-shan among its former students. The merger decision was primarily driven by persistent challenges in student enrollment and the need to optimize educational resources. The Education Bureau emphasized its commitment to ensuring a smooth transition throughout the merger process and to continuing its support for the development of basic education in the Islands District.
