On December 15, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region's High Court delivered a verdict in the case involving Jimmy Lai and three related companies, all charged with three counts of endangering national security. The court found the defendants guilty on all charges.
The ruling, which concludes a judicial process lasting over five years since the individual's initial arrest, carries significant meaning. It demonstrates the following key points:
First, it reinforces the authority of the law. Since 2020, the Hong Kong National Security Law and relevant legislation have been enacted to safeguard national security. The true value of law lies in its enforcement, and this verdict exemplifies how the legal system can effectively hold offenders accountable and prevent harmful acts.
Second, it upholds justice in Hong Kong. Over the years, external forces and individuals seeking to destabilize Hong Kong engaged in rampant unlawful acts, creating an environment where public anger was often suppressed. With the implementation of the National Security Law and improvements to electoral systems, Hong Kong has undergone positive changes. This ruling marks a clear end to decades of unrest and represents a decisive step toward restoring social righteousness.
Third, it reflects judicial fairness. The trial was conducted openly, fairly, and transparently, supported by a thorough police investigation and substantial evidence. Notably, the judicial process remained consistent throughout, with no intervention from the central government or the Chief Executive, even amid earlier legal debates regarding bail arrangements and defense counsel. This demonstrates the high degree of autonomy and respect for legal procedures upheld throughout the case.
Fourth, it contributes to restoring social stability in Hong Kong. For decades, media under the defendant's influence promoted harmful content, negatively impacting youth, families, and social harmony. Since the closure of the involved media outlet and the individual's arrest, Hong Kong society has gradually returned to normalcy, with families and communities beginning to heal. The verdict sends a clear message that actions threatening national security and social order will not be tolerated, reaffirming the importance of the rule of law and social responsibility.
This ruling is widely seen as a milestone in reinforcing the principle that Hong Kong is a society governed by law, where justice prevails, and stability is maintained in accordance with legal frameworks.
