A brand-new ferry route connecting Central Pier 9 and West Kowloon officially began operations today (Nov. 15), marking a significant step towards improving Hong Kong's waterfront connectivity. The service, allowing passengers to bring bicycles and pets, aims to attract both locals and tourists while promoting sustainable transportation.
Running every 30 minutes, the "Central-West Kowloon" ferry ride takes only 8 minutes. Operating hours are from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekdays, extending to 11 p.m. on weekends and public holidays. Adult fares are priced at HK$20 per trip, while pets are charged an additional HK$20.
Free tickets for the first two days of service, distributed earlier this week, were quickly snapped up. Starting Dec. 1, private vessels will also be able to dock at West Quay by booking slots online up to 30 days in advance.
The launch of the ferry service is expected to boost foot traffic in the West Kowloon area, benefitting local businesses.
Ms. Lam, a stall manager at the pier, stated that the pier has a promising flow of visitors and expressed confidence in the business opportunities following the commencement of ferry services. She expects the customer base to consist equally of local residents and tourists. The initial lease term for the venue is 2 to 3 years, with business strategies to be adjusted based on ferry schedules and passenger traffic.
Another vendor, "Lau Kee Boat Noodle," has also set up shop at the pier. Second-generation owner Mr. Lam said the stall's menu aligns with the pier's "fishing port" theme, offering traditional HK-style boat noodles made with fresh fish and seafood broth. To cater to the ferry's pet-friendly policy, the business is also exploring the development of pet-specific food items. Confident in the pier's potential, Mr. Lam believes the ferry service will attract a mix of local residents and tourists.
