An incident unfolded today (Oct. 18) when Air China Flight CA139, en route from Hangzhou to South Korea, was forced to make an emergency landing at Shanghai Pudong International Airport. According to passengers, the flight, which departed at 9:47 a.m., experienced a sudden fire in the overhead luggage compartment shortly after takeoff.
"Suddenly, there was a loud bang, and we saw flames coming from the overhead bin. The entire cabin filled with smoke," one passenger said.
According to mainland media, the fire was caused by the spontaneous combustion of a lithium battery inside a passenger's luggage.
