Thailand's Ministry of Tourism and Sports announced on Monday (Oct. 6) that it plans to roll out a new tourist fee scheme within four months, charging international arrivals 300 baht (approximately HK$72) per person. The measure, initially approved by the cabinet in 2023, has been delayed until now.

The newly appointed Minister of Tourism and Sports, Artthakorn Sirilatthayakorn, stated that the revenue generated from the fee will be used to provide medical insurance for tourists and refurbish tourism infrastructure, emphasizing its importance. Authorities also noted that the collection will help alleviate pressure on the national budget, with portions allocated for accident compensation and improving attractions to enhance the overall visitor experience.

The Thai cabinet first approved the tourist fee in February 2023. The original plan included charging air travelers 300 baht, with the fee incorporated into airline tickets. Although initially scheduled for implementation in June that year, the launch was postponed due to technical issues. Under the revised proposal, air passengers will be charged 300 baht, while those entering by land or sea will pay a reduced fee of 150 baht (approximately HK$36).

The Tourism Authority of Thailand forecasts international tourist arrivals to reach 33.4 million this year, reflecting a 6% decrease compared to last year.
