"If you see black, please turn back." On Aug. 19, the New York Post reported that U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Lynn Arnold Noem held a press conference in front of a section of the border wall in Santa Teresa, New Mexico, announcing that approximately 700 miles of the border wall along the southern U.S. border with Mexico would be painted entirely black.
According to reports, this plan was ordered by US President Trump himself and aims to further curb illegal border crossings. Noem emphasized at the press conference that the height of the border wall has made climbing "almost impossible," and its structure extends deep underground, greatly increasing the difficulty of digging tunnels. When discussing painting the wall black, Noem stated that this was a special request from Trump. "Clearly, in the high temperatures here, black objects will become even hotter, making it more difficult for people to climb," he said, even picking up a roller brush to participate in the painting.
According to CBS News, U.S. Border Patrol Chief Rodney S. Scott also attended the press conference, adding, "This paint also has anti-rust properties, which can extend the life of the border wall." To comprehensively strengthen border control, the plan will also include the deployment of surveillance facilities such as cameras and sensors on the border wall to further prevent illegal crossings.
CBS reported that the passage of the "Build the Wall" bill has provided the Department of Homeland Security with approximately US$46.5 billion in funding, giving strong support for border wall construction. Additionally, Trump has authorized the military to take over narrow public lands along the border, with thousands of military personnel already deployed to the border area.
