Record-breaking heavy rains have been recorded in many areas of Japan. In Kagoshima Prefecture, the downpour has triggered landslides, causing house collapses and resulting in one death. Local meteorological authorities predict that the heavy rain will continue at least until Tuesday (Aug. 12) and have issued disaster warnings for multiple areas.
According to the meteorological department, Japan is being affected by a broad linear rain band. Since the evening of Aug. 9, heavy rain has fallen in the area from Kitakyushu to Yamaguchi Prefecture. In Munakata City, Fukuoka Prefecture, rainfall reached 110 mm in just one hour before noon on Aug. 10, with a total of 412 mm accumulated over 24 hours, setting a historical record—twice the average rainfall for August in that area.
In a mountainous region of Kagoshima Prefecture, houses collapsed due to a landslide on Friday. On Sunday morning, rescue personnel found the body of a woman near the collapsed house, believed to be someone who had been reported missing after being inside the house. Three other individuals inside had previously been rescued.
Due to rainfall reaching critical levels on certain sections of the Sanyo Shinkansen in Yamaguchi Prefecture, operations on both directions of the Hiroshima to Hakata line were suspended around 1 pm local time on Sunday. The railway company stated that continued rainfall would delay the resumption of service. Additionally, Fukuoka Prefecture recorded over 400 mm of rain in a single day, leading to the suspension of Shinkansen services between Fukuoka and Hiroshima for the entire day.
NHK reported that the train suspensions occurred during a holiday period, causing significant disruptions for many passengers, with stations crowded with people.
