Guangdong Province has recorded 1,387 new locally transmitted chikungunya cases between August 3-9, according to the latest data from health authorities. The mosquito-borne viral disease has now spread across multiple cities, with Foshan accounting for the majority (1,212 cases), followed by Guangzhou (103) and Zhanjiang (39). No severe or fatal cases have been reported.
While disease control experts note the outbreak's growth rate has slowed in the hardest-hit Foshan, they warn of persistent risks. "The downward trend in new cases shows our containment measures are working," said Kang Min, Guangdong's chief infectious disease expert. "But with frequent international travel and ideal mosquito breeding conditions during typhoon season, we must remain vigilant."
The provincial CDC has deployed enhanced vector control measures, including targeted mosquito eradication and public education campaigns about eliminating standing water. Health officials emphasize that while the disease typically causes fever and joint pain rather than life-threatening symptoms, the widespread distribution across 15 cities complicates containment efforts.
Authorities are particularly concerned about potential imported cases as global chikungunya activity remains high. The combination of heavy summer rainfall and international travel hubs like Guangzhou and Shenzhen creates ongoing transmission risks. Residents are advised to use insect repellent and report stagnant water sources as the province continues its outbreak response.
