Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet reiterated on Sunday Cambodia's commitment to an "immediate and unconditional ceasefire" between the armed forces of Cambodia and Thailand.
In a social media update, Hun Manet mentioned that he spoke with U.S. President Donald Trump on Saturday night about the recent armed conflicts along the Cambodia-Thailand border.
During their conversation, Trump expressed his concern about the potential for war, which could result in significant casualties among both soldiers and civilians, and emphasized the need for an immediate ceasefire and peace between the two nations, according to Hun Manet.
"In response, I made it clear to Honorable President Donald Trump that Cambodia agreed with the proposal for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire between the two armed forces," he said.
Hun Manet also indicated that he had tasked Prak Sokhonn, the Cambodian deputy prime minister and foreign minister, with engaging U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio regarding the ceasefire proposal.
The clashes along the border between Cambodia and Thailand began on Thursday, with both sides accusing each other of breaching international law.
