In the vibrant tapestry of regional collaboration, cooperation weaves the golden threads of shared prosperity and cultural enrichment. Zhejiang, a powerhouse of economic and cultural heritage, and Hong Kong, a global beacon of finance and cultural fusion, stand as vital pillars within China's "One Country, Two Systems" framework. Their complementary strengths create a synergy that radiates potential. In 2024, trade between Zhejiang and Hong Kong soared to US$88.2 billion, marking a 10.9% year-on-year increase. Over 30,000 Hong Kong enterprises have invested in Zhejiang, while 137 Zhejiang companies are listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, a testament to the deep economic bonds uniting these regions.
The post-pandemic resurgence of tourism has ushered in a new era, with travelers seeking immersive, culturally rich experiences over fleeting visits. Hong Kong and Zhejiang are uniquely endowed with tourism treasures: Hong Kong's seamless blend of Eastern and Western cultures captivates the world, while Zhejiang's West Lake and Wuzhen are timeless jewels of global renown. I recall strolling through Wuzhen's serene waterways and quaint alleys, enchanted by the artistry of traditional dyeing and winemaking. A leisurely day at West Lake and nearby Longjing Village lingers in my memory, a vivid reminder of Zhejiang's cultural allure.
In 2024, Hong Kong's tourism revenue reached an impressive HK$120 billion, while Zhejiang's cultural tourism income surged by 15%. These figures illuminate a golden opportunity for a "win-win" partnership. Hong Kong's strength lies in its global tourism networks, connecting travelers worldwide, while Zhejiang boasts unparalleled cultural heritage. Yet, challenges persist: Hong Kong lacks large-scale cultural heritage sites, and Zhejiang seeks greater international visibility. Herein lies the spark of collaboration—Hong Kong can amplify Zhejiang's global presence through its networks, while Zhejiang's cultural riches enhance Hong Kong's tourism portfolio, creating a vibrant, interconnected offering.
I propose the creation of a "Zhejiang-Hong Kong Cultural Tourism Line," exemplified by a "West Lake and Victoria Harbour Twin Cities Journey." By hosting international cultural festivals, we can showcase the unique charms of both regions, encouraging tourists to explore them as a seamless, enriching experience. Such initiatives would not only elevate visitor numbers but also foster deeper cultural exchange, weaving a tapestry of shared heritage.
The United Nations World Tourism Organization defines cultural tourism as travel driven by cultural motivations—educational journeys, performing arts, festivals, historical sites, and explorations of nature, folklore, or art. Hong Kong and Zhejiang are ideally positioned to excel in this domain, with their rich resources ripe for integration into "Cultural Journey" packages. Looking to the future, we should aspire to establish a "Zhejiang-Hong Kong Cultural Corridor" brand, targeting markets in Southeast Asia, Europe, and the Americas to attract international travelers. This vision promises to transform tourism into a bridge of cultural understanding, positioning both regions as global leaders in immersive travel.
In conclusion, the Zhejiang-Hong Kong Cultural Tourism Line is a beacon of opportunity, illuminating a path toward economic vitality and cultural unity. By leveraging Hong Kong's global connectivity and Zhejiang's cultural treasures, we can craft a tourism ecosystem that resonates worldwide. As part of the Greater Bay Area's dynamic growth, this partnership will not only boost revenue but also strengthen cultural bonds, ensuring that Hong Kong and Zhejiang shine together as radiant jewels in the global tourism landscape.
