President Donald Trump unveiled plans to impose flat tariffs ranging from 15% to 50% on most trading nations during an artificial intelligence summit in Washington on Tuesday (July 22). We're implementing 50% tariffs because our relations with these countries have been consistently poor, Trump stated, though he did not specify which nations would face the highest rates.

The announcement represents a significant escalation from Trump's recent suggestions that tariff rates might remain at lower levels of around 10% to 15%. The president made the remarks while attending an AI Summit in Washington.

Regarding ongoing U.S.-EU trade talks, Trump revealed that negotiations are progressing seriously. He proposed that if the European Union agrees to further open its markets to American companies, the U.S. would allow the EU to pay lower tariff rates. This comes amid reports that the EU is preparing retaliatory tariffs on over US$100 billion worth of U.S. goods, though sources indicate both sides are close to reaching a trade and tariff agreement.

The Trump administration has been actively securing bilateral trade deals this week. On Tuesday, the president announced an agreement with Japan that will impose 15% tariffs on certain imports while securing a US$550 billion investment commitment from Tokyo. Earlier the same day, Trump revealed a trade deal with the Philippines that will subject Philippine imports to 19% tariffs while allowing U.S. exports to enter the country tariff-free.

The proposed tariff structure appears designed to use economic leverage to extract concessions, with higher rates targeting geopolitical adversaries. "This isn't just about trade — it's about respect," Trump emphasized during his summit appearance. The White House has not provided specific implementation timelines for the new tariff regime, which analysts warn could spark widespread trade disputes if enacted. Market reactions and diplomatic responses to the announcement are pending.
