According to multiple foreign media reports on July 23, a video of police violence captured in February of this year has recently gone viral on social media. The footage shows a white police officer in Jacksonville, Florida, smashing a car window, throwing punches at a Black man during a traffic stop, and forcibly dragging him out of the vehicle.
In response, the local police department stated that the video does not present the full context of the incident. "Yes, the law enforcement officer did use force, and it does appear to be quite harsh. However, just because the force looks bad does not mean it is illegal or violates relevant law enforcement regulations."
The police indicated that the review of the incident is still ongoing, but the state attorney's office has determined that no officers violated criminal law. They added that the officer who smashed the window and assaulted McNeil has been suspended from duty pending further review.
According to court records cited by ABC News, the Black man has been charged with resisting arrest, possession of marijuana, driving with a suspended license, not wearing a seatbelt, and failing to turn on headlights in poor weather conditions, resulting in a two-day jail sentence.
