The Office of the Communications Authority (OFCA) announced on July 7 the initiation of the Subsidy Scheme aimed at extending 5G coverage in rural and remote areas. Licensed mobile network operators (MNOs) interested in this initiative are encouraged to apply.
Through this scheme, participating MNOs will establish around 50 new subsidized radio base stations (RBSs) across various locations in Hong Kong, including country parks, outlying islands, and other rural regions. The goal is to enhance mobile network coverage and capacity, thereby improving the quality of life for residents and ensuring the safety of rural activities.
A spokesperson for OFCA indicated, "We expect that once the new RBSs are completed and operational, mobile network coverage in Hong Kong's country parks will rise to at least 90 percent, with coverage along major government hiking trails reaching 98 percent or higher. This Subsidy Scheme will improve network coverage in nearby areas, benefiting around 70 villages close to the proposed RBSs and allowing residents, citizens, and tourists to enjoy better mobile services, while also supporting the growth of smart tourism."
As stated in the 2023 Policy Address, the government plans to accelerate the expansion of mobile network infrastructure in rural and remote areas through subsidies. The Commerce and Economic Development Bureau and OFCA have finalized the specific arrangements for the Subsidy Scheme after conducting technical studies and stakeholder consultations. The Legislative Council approved the necessary funding in April.
OFCA will carefully evaluate applications and oversee the installation and future operation of the RBSs to ensure proper use of public funds.
