On July 7, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning held a regular press briefing. A reporter asked about U.S. President Donald Trump's criticism of the BRICS countries, which he claimed were pursuing anti-American policies, and his threat to impose a new 10% tariff on member states. What is China's comment on this?

Mao Ning stated that the BRICS mechanism is an important platform for cooperation among emerging markets and developing countries, advocating for openness, inclusivity, and win-win cooperation without engaging in camp-based confrontation or targeting any specific country. Regarding the proposed tariffs, she reiterated China's position that trade wars and tariff wars have no winners, and protectionism is not a viable path.

During the briefing, a foreign reporter pressed further on Trump's comments about BRICS, asking how China would respond if the U.S. continues to impose additional tariffs.

Mao Ning replied, "I have just outlined our perspective on the BRICS mechanism, which we view as a positive force in the international arena. BRICS cooperation is open and inclusive, not directed against any country. As for tariffs, we consistently oppose tariff wars and trade wars, and we reject the use of tariffs as a tool for coercion. Arbitrarily increasing tariffs does not serve the interests of any party."
