The president of the University of Virginia (UVA), James Ryan, has decided to resign under pressure from the Trump administration, according to US media reports on June 27.
The US Department of Justice is currently investigating the university's policies on "diversity, equity, and inclusion" (DEI). Ryan's resignation was reportedly a condition for settling the case. UVA's Board of Visitors has accepted Ryan's resignation to prevent potential disruptions to federal funding amounting to hundreds of millions of dollars.
The University of Virginia, a top-ranked public university in the US, has faced scrutiny over its progressive DEI policies during Ryan's presidency, which began in 2018. His tenure has drawn criticism from conservative alumni.
On Jan. 20, the first day of Donald Trump's presidency, he signed an executive order abolishing federal DEI initiatives, describing such policies as "radical" and "wasteful." The Trump administration has also launched investigations into several prominent universities, including Harvard and Columbia, targeting their diversity practices.
