This year's bumper lychee harvest in Guangdong province is driving robust domestic sales from south to north while fueling rapid expansion in international exports.
Traditionally, exports have been dominated by Feizixiao and Heiyelychee varieties due to their hardier skin. Now, advances in preservation technology and air transport allow even delicate varieties to reach overseas markets successfully.
Chinese lychees are now shipped globally, reaching markets across Europe, America, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and South America. Demand is surging—a Dubai supermarket sold around 800 kg within just two days.
Zhou Qiang, the produce procurement head of Wemart group, said that to guarantee peak freshness, they ensure the journey from picking to Dubai shelves takes no more than 48 hours.
In Dubai, a 1.5 kg box of Baitangyinglychees sells for AED 99 (194 yuan), or roughly 132 yuan per kilogram—a significant premium over domestic prices. Despite this, supermarket managers confirm shipments of around 800 kg consistently sell out within two days.
