This was my inaugural visit to Zhuhai. While Guangzhou and Shenzhen dominate conversations about Guangdong, this coastal city had remained off my radar – until now.
Touring the Greater Bay Area (GBA) with international consuls, I discovered Zhuhai's surprising trifecta: an ingenious urban design, pristine natural surroundings, and a strategic position that's rewriting regional economics. The city's land bridge connections to Hong Kong and Macao, supercharged by the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge and "Macao Vehicle Northbound" policy, have transformed it into mainland China's premier gateway to the special administrative regions.
Zhuhai isn't just participating in the GBA initiative – it's redefining its role. As the crucial link between Hong Kong-Macao and western Guangdong, the city is fast becoming the region's innovation laboratory and collaboration hub. The groundbreaking reforms at Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin and its burgeoning advanced manufacturing clusters showcase Zhuhai's dual identity: both as a sandbox for technological experimentation and a springboard for cross-boundary partnerships.

The "Macao resources + global tech + Zhuhai space" formula is proving revolutionary. Meanwhile, Zhuhai's transportation web – spanning its deep-water port, the soon-to-open Shenzhen-Zhongshan Corridor, and high-speed rail connections – is stitching together GBA's eastern and western flanks.
When consuls questioned why companies choose Hengqin, one biotech firm cut to the chase: "Money! The funding opportunities here are unbeatable." This blunt response nearly made everyone laugh, but also spoke volumes about the zone's successful pitch to innovators.

The visit to Kingsoft Software Park offered lighter moments. Diplomats turned amateur gamers, testing unreleased titles in professional esports rigs. The Netherlands CG, marveling at the cutting-edge graphics, quipped about his aging reflexes while noting potential synergies with the country's own gaming industry. Business leaders, meanwhile, couldn't resist documenting the sleek setups in that room.
The GBA vision demands seamless collaboration – but how? Zhuhai's playbook offers compelling answers. Through academic partnerships, joint ventures, and Hengqin's special status, this city is dissolving bureaucratic barriers, proving that regional integration isn't just possible – it's already happening.
