To address the challenges and opportunities brought by the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI), the University of Hong Kong (HKU)'s Faculty of Computing and Data Science has introduced a compulsory Artificial Intelligence Literacy course. All undergraduates enrolling in HKU starting from the 2025-26 academic year must complete the program to graduate. Details will be announced to incoming students in August.
In a social media post on May 8, HKU highlighted the new mandatory course, which aims to equip all undergraduates with foundational AI knowledge and skills. Covering topics from the rise of large language models to ethical considerations, the curriculum will include lectures, interactive workshops, and hands-on projects designed to demystify complex concepts. Students will learn core AI principles, techniques for interacting with AI systems, and methods to evaluate AI's societal impacts, empowering them to engage responsibly with an AI-driven world.
Professor Ian Holliday, Vice-President at HKU, confirmed that the course will be a graduation requirement for students admitted in the 2025-26 academic year and beyond. The content will be refined based on feedback from a pilot program conducted in the second semester of the current academic year. Assessment will follow a "Pass/Fail/Distinction" grading system, with specifics to be released in August.
Established last year, HKU's Faculty of Computing and Data Science focuses on advancing education and research in fields such as computational science, AI, statistical decision-making, fintech, and actuarial studies. The new course underscores the university's commitment to preparing students for evolving technological landscapes.
