Today (May 12) marks International Nurses Day. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) announced the recipients of the 50th Florence Nightingale Medal, honoring 35 nursing professionals from 17 countries, according to China News Service. Seven Chinese nursing workers, including Hong Kong Red Cross veteran medical volunteer Walter Leung, were recognized following a selection and nomination process organized by the Red Cross Society of China.
China has the highest number of awardees this year. Leung Wai-yin is the sole male recipient among the Chinese honorees. The other six awardees are: Feng Ling (Nurse at the AIDS Clinical Training Center of Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University); Han Lin (vice president of Gansu Provincial Hospital); Qin Yuling (Head Nurse of the Emergency Department at the Fifth Medical Center of the PLA General Hospital); Tian Li (Director of the Clinical Nursing Center at Tianjin Third Central Hospital); Xing Hong (chief nurse of the Oncology Center at Shanghai General Hospital); Zhang Yulian (Chief nurse at Shaanxi Provincial People's Hospital).
Established by the ICRC in 1912, the Florence Nightingale Medal is the highest international honor in nursing, commemorating the groundbreaking contributions of Florence Nightingale in improving battlefield medical care. Candidates must demonstrate long-term dedication to nursing or volunteer healthcare work, exceptional ethical standards, advanced professional expertise, and extraordinary courage or commitment in responding to major emergencies or caring for patients with complex medical conditions.
