U.S. defense secretary Pete Hegseth reportedly shared sensitive information about upcoming military strikes in Yemen on March 15 through a private Signal group chat that included his wife, brother, and personal lawyer, according to The New York Times. Hegseth disclosed flight schedules for F/A-18 Hornets targeting Houthi positions.
On the same day, he also sent operational details regarding the strikes in another Signal chat that mistakenly included "The Atlantic" editor-in-chief Jeffrey Goldberg, who later discussed this incident in an article on March 24.
Hegseth's wife, Jennifer, a former Fox News producer, is not affiliated with the Defense Department, while his brother Phil and personal lawyer Tim Parlatore both work within the Pentagon. The newly revealed chat was specifically created by Hegseth for sharing this information.
The use of the Signal app for discussing military operations has drawn criticism and prompted an investigation by the Defense Department's acting Inspector General, Steven Stebbins.
