Today (April 15) is the 10th National Security Education Day. It marks the fifth anniversary of the promulgation by the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress for implementation of the Hong Kong National Security Law, as well as the first anniversary of the legislation and implementation of the Safeguarding National Security Ordinance. The Committee for Safeguarding National Security of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) held the Opening Ceremony cum Seminar of the National Security Education Day at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre in the morning.
John Lee, the Chief Executive of the HKSAR and Chairman of the Hong Kong National Security Committee, attended the event and delivered a speech.
Lee criticized the US for its "arbitrary and reckless" actions against China and the HKSAR, describing its behavior as "deranged." Highlighting the US's imposition of a 145% "reciprocal tariff" on Hong Kong exports, he pointed out the absurdity of the measure, stating that Hong Kong is a zero-tariff free port. If reciprocity were to be applied, the rate should be zero, not 145%.
He noted that the move by the US not only demonstrates "false logic" but also exposes its hegemonic approach. He accused the US of opposing free trade, disrupting global trade and supply chains, undermining the rules established by the World Trade Organization, and damaging the multilateral trading system and globalization.
Lee emphasized that facing such blatant acts of hegemony, Hong Kong must stand firm, remain united, and focus on its own development. He reaffirmed the HKSAR's full support for the motherland's efforts to counter US challenges, safeguard the country's legitimate rights, and uphold international fairness and justice.
Lee also remarked that the tariff war has reshaped global trade order, with a new system gradually taking shape. He stated that this transition poses both challenges and opportunities for Hong Kong. As a zero-tariff free port, Hong Kong is well-positioned to attract more trade, business activities, and emerging markets.
The Chief Executive stressed that Hong Kong must unswervingly and fully implement the "one country, two systems" principle, fully and faithfully implement a holistic approach to national security, continuously improve its national security legal framework and enforcement mechanisms, and enhance public education on safeguarding national security. He is confident that the resilience, adaptability, and fighting spirit inherent in Hong Kong people will enable the city to sail through adversity and prove its strength in the face of trials.
