Promoting scam prevention knowledge is more important than combating scams, and the police will continue to organize various anti-scam activities, including promotions on social media, Commissioner of Police Joe Chow stated today (April 12) during a radio program.
Chou pointed out that the "Scameter" app, launched by the police in recent years, has around 900,000 downloads, which he believes is insufficient, as more downloads would be better.
He described scams as a virus that can mutate, and the "Scameter" as a vaccine that can protect one's finances. He further noted that the police are researching ways for the "Scameter" to automatically update information on scam phone numbers and provide details on various scams.
Chou mentioned that scams have formed an industrial chain, and the difficulty in solving cases lies in the fact that scammers and their groups may not be located in Hong Kong, making immediate resolution challenging. He emphasized the need for international cooperation and pointed out that many scams occurring in the city involve "puppet accounts." The police will focus on targeting individuals who sell these accounts.
