According to a report from Axios on March 30, US President Donald Trump is planning to visit Saudi Arabia in mid-May. US officials have been discussing the potential visit with Saudi counterparts over the past few weeks. If the plan goes ahead, it will mark Trump's first overseas trip since returning to the White House.
Trump stated to reporters on March 6 that he might visit Saudi Arabia within the next month and a half. Sources indicated that an earlier proposed date for the visit was April 28, but the schedule has since been pushed back. The current plan is for Trump to travel to Saudi Arabia in mid-May.
The report further noted that it is unclear whether Trump will visit other countries in the Middle East following his stop in Saudi Arabia. Israeli officials have mentioned that the White House has not yet discussed the possibility of Trump visiting Israel during this trip. Both the White House and the Saudi embassy in the US have declined to comment on the matter.
On Jan. 23, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman spoke with Trump over the phone, promising to increase investments in the US by US$600 billion over the next four years. Trump has hinted at choosing Saudi Arabia as his first destination for an overseas trip, contingent on Saudi Arabia agreeing to "pay up."
