Time Out, a British magazine, conducted a survey of 18,500 residents in 50 countries or regions to determine the world's best public transport based on their satisfaction with public transportation.
Hong Kong won the title with 98% satisfaction, Shanghai ranked second with 94% satisfaction, Beijing ranked third with 91% satisfaction, and Abu Dhabi (the capital of the United Arab Emirates) and Taipei ranked fourth and fifth, respectively.
The evaluation selected 19 major cities out of 50 countries or regions as the best-performing cities in terms of public transportation, and more than half of them are in Asia. As for Hong Kong as the world's best city in terms of public transportation, it was reported that apart from the nostalgic double-decker trams, Hong Kong also has a huge and efficient MTR and bus transportation network, which can be traveled without any obstacles with a single Octopus card. Shanghai's most impressive feature is the Maglev train, which takes visitors from the airport to the city in just eight minutes. The city is also well-served by 20 subway lines and 2,000 bus routes and ferries, making travel choices diverse and convenient.
As for Beijing, the report describes the city as being highly bike-friendly, with a wide range of bike-sharing options available to the public and tourists, making it stand out in the survey. Taipei Station is a transportation hub, with not only the Taiwan High Speed Rail and the Taiwan Railway connecting the whole of Taiwan, but also a well-connected MRT system, and urban buses are also very convenient.
