Attention travelers to Japan! The Kyoto Prefectural Assembly has approved a new accommodation tax adjustment, set to take effect on March 1, 2026. Under this new policy, the maximum accommodation tax per night will increase to JP¥10,000 (approximately HK$516).
Current vs. New Tax Structure
At present, Kyoto's accommodation tax is divided into three tiers:
JP¥200 per person per night for stays under JP¥20,000
JP¥500 per person per night for stays between JP¥20,000 and JP¥50,000
JP¥1,000 per person per night for stays above JP¥50,000
Under the new tax scheme, the rates will be adjusted to five tiers:
JP¥200 per person per night for stays under JP¥6,000 (approx. HK$10.3)
JP¥400 per person per night for stays between JP¥6,000 and JP¥20,000 (approx. HK$21)
JP¥1,000 per person per night for stays between JP¥20,000 and JP¥50,000 (approx. HK$51.6)
JP¥4,000 per person per night for stays between JP¥50,000 and JP¥100,000 (approx. HK$206)
JP¥10,000 per person per night for stays above JP¥100,000 (approx. HK$516)
According to Japanese media reports, the revised accommodation tax is expected to generate an estimated JP¥12.6 billion in additional revenue for the Kyoto city government.
As Japan remains a top travel destination, this tax increase may impact travel budgets, especially for those staying in luxury hotels or high-end accommodations. Travelers planning their Kyoto trips after March 2026 should factor in these additional costs.
With Kyoto implementing one of the highest accommodation taxes in Japan, tourists should prepare for higher lodging expenses. If you're planning a trip to Japan, it may be worth booking accommodations in advance or considering alternative lodging options to manage travel costs effectively.
