The West Kowloon Traffic Unit of the Hong Kong Police launched a large-scale traffic enforcement operation today (March 25) to combat traffic violations, particularly targeting drivers failing to yield to pedestrians at zebra crossings.

At noon, multiple traffic officers were deployed at Tak Cheong Street Footbridge in Whampoa, using video recording devices to monitor driver behavior. When a violation was detected, officers immediately notified ground units, who stopped the vehicles, recorded driver details, and issued penalty tickets.

Within 30 minutes, police identified four vehicles violating pedestrian right-of-way laws, including a truck, a BYD private car, a taxi, and a Tesla private car. Each driver faced a HK$450 fine and a 3-point deduction from their driving record.

Taxi driver Mr. Tao admitted that he was unaware of the police operation and acknowledged his failure to stop at the crossing.

"I didn't see the pedestrian, so I didn't stop," he explained.

This was his first time receiving such a fine, and he expressed frustration, claiming the enforcement was unfair.

"The car next to me didn't stop either, but they only fined me. That's unfair."

He also complained about the fine's impact on his earnings:

"HK$450 is a lot. I can barely make that much in a day—it's hard to afford."

Another driver, Mr. Wong, was also fined for failing to yield. He acknowledged awareness of the law but claimed he didn't see the pedestrian due to another vehicle blocking his view.

"There's nothing I can do. I'll have to stop properly next time before moving forward."

Despite his frustration, he accepted the penalty as a lesson learned.

The Hong Kong Police emphasized that strict enforcement of traffic regulations is crucial to ensuring pedestrian safety. They urged all drivers to remain vigilant and comply with traffic laws to avoid penalties and contribute to safer roads.
