The new Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (DSE) written exam will begin on April 1. In light of the recent unstable weather, with periods of sunshine and rain, the Examination and Assessment Authority announced today (March 20) that it has developed a series of contingency plans for adverse weather on the exam day, ready to respond appropriately if needed. The authority reminds that even if the Education Bureau announces school closures due to bad weather, the DSE exams that day may not be postponed. If the Hong Kong Observatory issues a red rainstorm warning, the exams will generally proceed as scheduled, and no further announcements will be made by the authority.
If a tropical cyclone warning of signal 8 or higher or a black rainstorm warning is issued, the exams will be postponed. The authority typically announces the postponement about two hours before the scheduled start time, and candidates should pay attention to relevant announcements. Additionally, if a candidate is hospitalized or unable to attend the exam due to illness or injury, the authority states that there will be no makeup exams for the DSE written test. If the attending physician agrees and confirms that the candidate is fit to take the exam, the candidate may apply to take the exam in the hospital. Family members should contact the authority at least one working day before the exam for the relevant subject and provide authorization and supporting documents.
If a candidate cannot attend the exam due to severe illness, the authority will assess their subject score based on their performance in parts of the same subject already taken. If a candidate misses the entire subject exam, school candidates may apply through their school to the authority for a "subject assessment score", which will be determined by comparing the candidate's performance with that of their classmates in the same subject at school, as well as their classmates' performance in the same subject in the current DSE. However, the assessment score for the candidate may reach a maximum of Level 5.
Furthermore, the authority reminds candidates to call the office for record-keeping before the exam and to submit a written application to the Secretary of the Examination and Assessment Authority within 21 calendar days after the exam date, along with the original certificate issued by the relevant doctor on the exam day.
