According to a report by China News Service citing Japan Broadcasting Corporation (NHK), rice prices have been on the rise across Japan, with the average price in supermarkets nearly doubling compared to the same period in 2024.
Data from the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries indicates that the average price of rice during the week of March 3 to 9 was 4,077 yen (approximately HK$212) for every 5 kilograms. In contrast, the price for the same period last year was about 2,045 yen (approximately HK$106). This week's data shows an increase of 125 yen from the previous week, marking the tenth consecutive week of price hikes, with an overall increase of over 2,000 yen compared to last year.
The report states that despite the Japanese government's announcement to release stored rice into the market, it has been difficult to stem the continued rise in supermarket rice prices.
