The Transport and Logistics Bureau announced on March 13 that the total registered tonnage of Hong Kong-registered ships reached a near 10-year high by the end of last year, ranking as the fourth largest in the world, following Liberia, Panama, and the Marshall Islands.
The Marine Department will continue to leverage its global network to actively promote the advantages of HK ship registration to shipowners and maritime companies worldwide.
In a social media post, the bureau emphasized HK's robust maritime industry. According to the International Shipping Centre Development Index, HK has retained its position as the world's fourth-leading shipping hub for five consecutive years, underscoring its solid standing as an international maritime center.
Recent figures show that over 1,200 port- and shipping-related companies operate in HK, marking a 10% increase over the past five years.
Moreover, the detention rate of HK-registered vessels in port states worldwide stands at 0.69%, significantly lower than the global average of 3.30%. HK ranks among the top three in safety and reliability among the world's top 10 commercial ship registries, highlighting the security and dependability of its fleet.
