Sitting in the cargo bed of an electric tricycle, 18-year-old Zhang Liwen gazed at the sunset as she traveled along a bumpy road after a long day of planting suosuo trees in Badain Jaran, China's third-largest desert. This moment marked the end of her five-day volunteer trip in Minqin County, Gansu Province, showcased in her engaging vlog.
Inspired by a farming reality show aimed at youth, Zhang, from Xi'an, sought to contribute to the reclamation of desertified land through tree planting. Minqin, located between the Badain Jaran and Tengger deserts, relies on suosuo trees (haloxylon ammodendron) for their drought resistance, which helps stabilize dunes.
Motivated by a desire for meaningful experiences, Zhang found a volunteer program on social media and participated during her winter break. Like her, many Gen-Z individuals are eager to take on challenging tasks, using their tech-savvy skills to raise awareness through personal stories on platforms like Douyin.
Ma Junhe, the founder of the volunteer program, noted that today's youth enjoy better living standards, which fosters confidence in pursuing their goals. Zhang echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that young people find value in engaging in public welfare activities.
Zhang's vlogs capture the lively atmosphere of the camp, showcasing young volunteers planting seedlings, enjoying local cuisine, and dancing in the desert. Despite challenges like cold nights and basic living conditions, she found the experience rewarding.
The program, running from mid-February to May, accommodates volunteers with free lodging and meals while working with local farmers. Last year, over 6,000 volunteers participated, most of whom were aged 20 to 35.
Since its inception in 2007, the program has evolved, with Ma adapting to media trends to raise awareness about desertification. By utilizing popular platforms among youth, he shares vivid stories about the desert and its challenges.
Zhang recognized the physical demands of the work, noting that even seemingly simple tasks can become exhausting. Social media has also helped garner awareness and sponsorship for the initiative.
The camp provides job opportunities for local women, supplementing their household income. As of last June, Minqin County had achieved over 2.3 million mu of artificial afforestation, with significant increases in forest coverage.
China's commitment to tree planting is evident, with March 12 designated as National Tree Planting Day, reflecting the country's dedication to combating desertification and promoting environmental conservation.
