A coffee shop in Pu'er, Yunnan, has sparked curiosity and debate by introducing a new line of "insect coffee," featuring fried grasshoppers, bamboo worms, and wild bees. The drinks, priced between RMB 68 and RMB 88, are made by adding fried insects into a cup before pouring in coffee.
The shop owner explained that the idea behind insect coffee stems from local dietary habits, as these insects are common snacks in Yunnan and can be easily found in local markets. "We've always focused on creating products with local characteristics. These insects are popular bar snacks here, and I eat them myself," the owner shared.
The unique coffee has drawn mixed reactions online, with some expressing astonishment, asking, "Who would drink this?" Others, including local residents, have embraced the concept. One local customer shared their experience on social media, describing the drink as "a unique flavor worth trying" and added, "In Yunnan, we only play at the highest level." Another remarked, "Eating these insects is perfectly normal in Yunnan."
The shop owner also issued a warning for people allergic to high-protein foods, advising them to avoid the drink to prevent adverse reactions.
