The Office of the Customs Tariff Commission of China's State Council announced today (March 8) that China will impose tariffs on select Canadian goods starting March 20, 2025. The decision comes in response to Canada's recent unilateral tariff measures targeting Chinese products.
The Canadian government revealed that, effective October 1, 2024, it will impose a 100% tariff on Chinese electric vehicles, followed by a 25% tariff on Chinese steel and aluminum products starting October 22, 2024.
Canada's unilateral imposition of tariffs disregards objective facts and World Trade Organization (WTO) rules, represents a typical act of trade protectionism, constitutes discriminatory measures against China, seriously infringes upon China's legitimate rights and interests, and undermines China-Canada economic and trade relations.
In retaliation, and in accordance with Chinese domestic laws and international principles, the State Council has approved countermeasures. Starting March 20, 2025, China will impose 100% tariff on rapeseed oil, oilcakes and peas originating from Canada, and 25% tariff on Canadian-origin seafood and pork products.
China has urged Canada to adopt a rational approach to bilateral trade, respect objective facts, comply with WTO rules, and immediately rectify its improper actions.
