A short video circulating on social media today (Feb. 24) shows contract cleaners allegedly staging a cleanup in Sham Shui Po's Nam Cheong Street, where they were seen removing street advertisements they had posted themselves. The Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) has expressed concern over the incident and is launching an investigation.
According to reports, the video captures four individuals, suspected to be FEHD contract cleaners, who reportedly brought and affixed the advertisements before filming themselves as proof of their work, only to remove them shortly after.
An FEHD spokesperson indicated that initial investigations revealed the four individuals are employees of a contractor providing street cleaning services. The department has instructed the contractor to suspend these employees from their duties until the investigation is complete. The spokesperson emphasized the importance of the contractor's performance and the conduct of its employees, stating that if the investigation confirms the allegations, the FEHD will take serious action, including service fee deductions and documentation for future procurement considerations. Additionally, the department will refer the matter to the police for suspected record falsification.
The spokesperson clarified that the involved personnel were responsible for removing unauthorized street advertisements and posters and were required to document their work. However, the FEHD did not set a minimum target for the number of advertisements to be removed by contractor employees. The department will continue to closely monitor the contractor's performance to ensure compliance with service contract standards.
