Many Hongkongers holding British National (Overseas) passports (BNO) face difficulties finding jobs after moving to the UK. Even when they do find work, they often experience pay cuts and demotions. Many are unable to return to their previous professions in Hong Kong and can only start from low-level positions such as warehouse work and cashier roles.
According to the Financial Times, on the surface, Hongkongers moving to the UK face fewer barriers to integration than other immigrants, as many are highly educated individuals in their respective fields, fluent in English, and have sufficient funds to settle in the UK. However, due to language barriers, cultural differences, and lack of recognition of their qualifications, many can only take low-paying temporary jobs and cannot return to their former careers.
