The government met separately with representatives from the taxi industry and ride-hailing platforms yesterday (Feb. 19) to explore how to regulate these services. The Commissioner for Transport, Angela Lee Chung-yan, stated in a radio program today (Feb. 20) that the meeting included over 20 representatives from the taxi industry, discussing legislative measures regarding unlicensed vehicles.
She noted that both the authorities and the industry share the common goal of providing legal, compliant, and high-quality services to the public.
Lee mentioned that the industry hopes the government will expedite efforts to crack down on unlicensed vehicles and that ride-hailing platforms should take responsibility to ensure that vehicles and drivers providing passenger services are licensed. She stated that the government will review and establish relevant regulations to protect the rights of citizens.
Hong Kong Tele-call Taxi Association chairman Wong Yu-ting responded during the radio program, indicating that the meeting primarily focused on whether ride-hailing platforms need to be licensed, rather than discussing strike actions. He mentioned that the industry has submitted a preliminary proposal to the government and urged the government to consider Macao's approach to regulating ride-hailing platforms.
Wong also noted that Lee emphasized a strengthened enforcement effort with the police against unlicensed vehicles, stating that the taxi industry accepts the government's response.
