Most regions in Guangdong Province are currently experiencing a surge in flu cases, prompting Hong Kong residents to take extra precautions when traveling.

Recent visits to hospitals in Guangzhou by reporters revealed a significant increase in outpatient visits to respiratory departments. Online platforms have also reported a sharp rise in both the search volume and sales of flu-related medications.

The flu spreads rapidly and can affect a wide range of people, particularly the elderly and children, who are more susceptible due to weaker immune systems. Liu Shiyi, deputy chief physician of the emergency department at the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine, emphasized the importance of seeking medical attention promptly if typical flu symptoms such as high fever, muscle aches, sneezing, and runny nose are present. Liu highlighted that the first 48 hours after infection are crucial for effective treatment. "Using antiviral medications within the first 48 hours yields the best results," he stated.

Flu can lead to serious complications, including pneumonia, central nervous system infections, myocarditis, and myositis. Liu pointed out two key indicators to assess whether a patient's condition is worsening. First, monitor the patient's respiratory rate; if their breathing rate exceeds 30 breaths per minute at rest or if they experience noticeable shortness of breath, it is essential to be vigilant. Second, check the patient's blood oxygen saturation. Those with a pulse oximeter should measure their levels, and if oxygen saturation falls below 93% while at rest, it serves as a warning sign of severe flu, indicating that immediate medical attention is necessary.
