Taiwan actress Barbie Hsu, known as Big S, tragically passed away at the age of 48 during her trip to Japan, succumbing to pneumonia complicated by influenza.
Reports suggest that she may have experienced health issues before she arrived in Japan, with suspicions of having contracted the flu in Taiwan. However, sources indicate that she was in good health upon arriving in Tokyo.
According to insiders, she began experiencing severe coughing one to two days after she arrived in Japan, which led to pneumonia. Her condition deteriorated rapidly, and she was rushed to the hospital. Despite not being placed on an ECMO machine, she sadly passed away. The attending physician later confirmed the cause of death as sepsis.
Earlier reports claimed that she showed signs of coughing and asthma symptoms on her first day in Japan (Jan. 29) after visiting an onsen in Hakone. Her condition worsened, and on the evening of Jan. 31, she was hospitalized three times, with indications of Type A influenza. However, she was not admitted for overnight care. After receiving medication at Hakone Hospital, she returned to Tokyo, but her condition deteriorated overnight, leading to her being hospitalized again. She passed away on Feb. 2 at 7 am.
It was reported that during her final moments, Big S was surrounded by her mother, husband Koo Jun-yup, two children, sister Dee Hsu, sister's husband Mike, niece Lily, and other family members. As they learned of her grim condition, the atmosphere in the hospital room was filled with sorrow, as none expected her to pass away after being admitted. Big S's remains have been cremated in Japan, and her family plans to bring her ashes back to Taiwan for burial.
