Sammo Hung expresses will to 'challenge himself' with romantic films
The 18th Asian Film Awards ceremony will take place on March 16 in West Kowloon, with the legendary Hong Kong filmmaker Sammo Hung serving as the jury chair.
As a pioneer of action cinema, Hung's career spans over fifty years, during which he has contributed numerous iconic works to both Hong Kong and global cinema. He won the Best Supporting Actor award for "Ip Man 2" at the 5th Asian Film Awards and received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 16th edition.
Expressing his honor in taking on the role of jury chair, Hung remarked on the opportunity to interact with fellow Asian filmmakers and audiences. He acknowledged that film appreciation is highly subjective, stating, "Everyone has their feelings and opinions." While he intends to provide honest evaluations, he believes in the importance of dialogue and collaboration during the judging process.
Hung emphasized that the awards serve not only to evaluate films but also to showcase Asian cinema. He noted the wealth of impressive works emerging from the region and expressed his anticipation for promoting cinematic culture through this platform, allowing more audiences to appreciate the depth and charm of Asian films.
When asked about the challenges of his various roles as director, producer, and actor, Hung identified directing as the most demanding, requiring comprehensive oversight of the set and meticulous attention to detail. Despite his extensive experience in action films, he expressed a desire to explore new territory, particularly in the romantic film genre he has yet to fully explore, having dabbled in it briefly with the 1989 film "Eight Taels of Gold."
Discussing the value of action films, Hung stated, "Action cinema should not only present thrilling sequences but also convey power and emotion behind each move, achieving a balance of artistry and athleticism." He highlighted the unifying nature of action films, which blend elements of comedy, thriller, and romance, creating limitless creative possibilities. He looks forward to seeing more innovative approaches to action cinema in the future.
