Govt warns public of 'petfishing' scams on social media
In recent years, many members of the public have bought pets through social media or online platforms. In a posting on its social media page today (Jan. 16), the government reminded the public to be careful of falling victim to "petfishing" scams.
According to the post, some unscrupulous pet sellers post false information about pets online to attract buyers to purchase pets with health problems or breeds that do not match their descriptions. The buyers may not only suffer financial losses, but some of the pets may even fall sick or even die soon after their arrival at home, and it would be difficult to hold the sellers accountable for the subsequent disappearance of their pets. In addition, most of the scam cases involving pets claiming to be "home-bred" are unlicensed, which is not only risky but also completely unprotected in terms of animal welfare.
The government suggests that potential pet owners should consider adopting pets instead of buying them in order to save precious lives. If you still want to buy a pet, you should buy it from a licensed seller.
