Japan shaken by three earthquakes in one day, largest at magnitude 4.7
Japan experienced three earthquakes today (Jan. 16), according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. The largest of these tremors registered a magnitude of 4.7.
- 4:22 a.m.: A magnitude 4.3 earthquake struck off the coast of Amami Oshima, with a depth of 60 km.
- 7:38 a.m.: A stronger earthquake with a magnitude of 4.7 hit off the coast of Urakawa, Hokkaido. The tremor, at a depth of 50 km, was felt at a maximum seismic intensity of 3. No tsunami risk was reported.
- 9:07 a.m.: Another earthquake, with a magnitude of 4.5, occurred off the coast of Chiba Prefecture at a depth of 50 km.
