According to a report by The Guardian, nearly 1.9 million violent or sexual crime cases in England and Wales were closed without any suspects being arrested or charged in the year leading up to June 2024. This figure represents 89% of cases in over 600 areas with the highest rates of such crimes.

Nicole Jacobs, an official responsible for addressing violence against women and children, expressed deep concern over the declining resolution rates for violent and sexual offenses. She stated that the fact that more victims are being let down repeatedly is completely unacceptable. These figures highlight the urgency of tackling violence against women and girls in the UK, which is why they have set an unprecedented goal of halving violent crimes within the next decade.

Data reveals that the overall detection rate for violent and sexual offenses in England and Wales stands at just 11%, which is half the rate reported seven years ago. The situation in major cities is particularly severe. According to Home Office statistics, the West Midlands Police solved only 6.9% of cases in the past year, London's Metropolitan Police reported a clearance rate of just 7%, while Lancashire and Cumbria achieved slightly better rates at 19.2% and 18%, respectively.

Violent and sexual crimes include offenses such as serious physical assault, sexual assault, stalking, harassment, and rape.
