New banknotes to be available for exchange from tomorrow
The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA), together with the three note-issuing banks, namely HSBC, Standard Chartered Hong Kong and BOC Hong Kong, will offer the new notes and good-as-new notes for redemption from tomorrow (January 14) to Lunar New Year's Eve (Jan. 28).
Members of the public can make an appointment online to redeem new notes and good-as-new notes.
Specific time schedule:
◆ Starting from January 7 (Tuesday), online booking for the exchange of new notes and good-as-new notes will be available;
◆ New notes and good-as-new notes will be available for redemption from January 14 (Tuesday) to January 28 (Lunar New Year's Day/Tuesday);
◆ From January 14 (Tuesday) to January 16 (Thursday), i.e. the first three days when the note exchange service is available, branches will open earlier to 8:00 a.m., i.e. from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. exclusively for the provision of the note exchange service.
In particular, the HKMA reminds the three note-issuing banks that they will ensure the supply of new notes and good-as-new notes throughout the entire period of the note exchange service, so there is no need for members of the public to rush to exchange banknotes during the first few days of the service. The HKMA also encourages members of the public to make use of electronic payment methods
