A man visiting Chongqing Zoo was detained by police yesterday (Jan. 5) after throwing a full bottle of cola at a giant panda named Lan Xiang. The incident sparked outrage among onlookers, who called out the man for his behavior.
According to local media reports, witnesses said they heard a loud bang and turned to see the man hurling the bottle directly at the panda's head. Lan Xiang, visibly startled, sat up in reaction. Visitors at the scene confronted the man, who appeared unapologetic. In an unusual turn, the man himself called the police, claiming he was being "attacked" by the crowd for his actions.
Zoo staff responded quickly, guiding Lan Xiang to a safe area using food to ensure the animal's well-being.
A spokesperson for Chongqing Zoo confirmed today (Jan. 6) that the man has been taken into police custody for investigation.
